Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Groups

If you are interested in joining the patient and public involvement community in Scotland, several groups run across Scotland focused on a range of therapy areas. The sections below contain information on the groups, frequency of meetings and contact information.

Ageing

The Advanced Care Research Centre PPI Network

Group base: Adults with an interest or lived experience in ageing, including as a carer to older relatives/family.

Run from the University of Edinburgh.

Arthritis and Orthopaedic

The Gain Group - Glasgow Arthritis Involvement Network (GAIN) 

Group base: People living with arthritis and related conditions.

Cardiovascular

REACH HF PPIE Steering Group

Group base: Adults interested in heart failure rehabilitation.

Based in Glasgow but happy to include people living across UK. 4 meetings each year (currently on Zoom).

Care Homes

Research in Care Homes (RICH) Voices

Group base: People living or working in care homes.

Group run by Enabling Research in Care Homes (ENRICH) Scotland.

Children

Scottish Children’s Research Network Young Persons Advocacy Group 

Age: 11-16 

Group base: All patients, siblings of patients or young people interested in research and healthcare.

COVID

University of Glasgow College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences Covid PPIE Group 

Group base: Adults interested in COVID health care research.

Based in Glasgow but happy to include people living across West of Scotland. 8 meetings each year (currently on Zoom).

Critical Care

Edinburgh Critical Care Research PPI Group

Group base: Adults with lived experience of Critical Care, both patients and relatives.

Based in Edinburgh, but happy to include people living across Scotland.

Diabetes

NRS Diabetes Group

Group base: Dundee, but happy to include any diabetes patient living in Scotland.

Diabetes Type: Any type.

Currently looking for panel members.

 

Research Advisory Panel- Diabetes Medical Informatics and Epidemiology Research Group, University of Edinburgh

Group Base: Diabetes patient living in Scotland

Diabetes Type: Any

Based in Edinburgh, but recruiting nationally. We are looking for any diabetes patients interested in shaping and reviewing our ongoing and upcoming research priorities and conduct.

3-4 meetings per year (currently via Microsoft Teams), with 1 in-person annual meeting.

General (including Primary Care)

NHS Research Scotland Primary Care Network PPI Group

Group base: Adults interested in primary care.

Based in Glasgow but happy to include people living across Scotland. 4 meetings each year (currently on Zoom)

 

University of Glasgow College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences PPIE Steering Group

Group base: Adults interested in health care research.

Based in Glasgow but happy to include people living across West of Scotland. 5 meetings each year (currently on Zoom).

 

PERFORM PPIE Group

Group base: Adults interested in rehabilitation for Multiple Long Term Conditions.

Co-based in Glasgow and Leicester but happy to include people living across UK. 4 meetings each year (currently on Zoom).

 

Edinburgh Clinical Research Facility Patient Advisory Group

Group base: Adults with an interest in health research and lived experience of healthcare, illness or treatment, including carers. 

Based in Edinburgh but open to anyone across Scotland, meetings currently taking place online.

 

University of Aberdeen Epidemiology Patient and Public Involvement Group

Not currently recruiting to the group they have set-up, but are always looking for members of the public to join their PPI database.

To join this group members of the public should complete an expression of interest form.

 

University of Dundee, Tayside Medical Science (TASC) PPI Group

Group base: Adults interested in health care research

Patients & members of the public based in Tayside. This group is available to support researchers at the University of Dundee or NHS Tayside at pre-application project planning stages. Meetings take place over Microsoft Teams.

Neuroprogressive and Dementia

NHS Research Scotland Neuroprogressive and Dementia  Network PPI Group

Group base: NDN partners in research including people from all of the UK.

Type: anyone with the lived experience of Neuroprogressive conditions or dementia, their partners, or people interested in research.

Currently looking for panel members.

Mental Health

NHS Research Scotland Mental Health PPI Group

Group base: Edinburgh, but covers whole of Scotland. Most meetings are done online at present.

Currently looking for panel members.

Oral and Dental

Oral and Dental Research Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) group

Group base: Run from the School of Dentistry, University of Dundee, including the community served by Dundee Dental Hospital (DDH) and primary care practices within Tayside, as well as third sector and voluntary organisations (people with experience of homelessness, people with experience of drugs, people with experience of head and neck cancers)

Respiratory

Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research – Patient and Public Involvement Group

Group base: Those with lived experience of asthma.

Group run by the University of Edinburgh Research Fellow Tracy Jackson.
