Infectious Diseases Resident Doctor Representatives
NHS Research Scotland's Infectious Diseases team were joined by Dr Helen Callaby and Dr Clark Russell as resident doctor representatives in 2023, aiming to make infectious diseases research activities more accessible to Scottish resident doctors interested in academic aspects of infection medicine. Helen and Clark represent Scottish resident doctors on a UK-wide resident doctor representative group which feeds into the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network.
Working with Charis Marwick and Sarah Kennedy, the team organised an in-person meeting for Scottish resident doctors interested in finding out more about academic opportunities in Scotland. This included talks from clinical academics supported by NHS Research Scotland discussing their career paths, talks showcasing ongoing research within Scotland, and talks covering practical aspects of conducting research. The group collected detailed feedback from participants, focussing on perceived barriers to research engagement, and will use this information to shape future initiatives for resident doctors.
In 2026, the Infectious Diseases Specialty Group are once again offering an exciting opportunity for a new resident doctor to help make infectious diseases research activities more accessible to resident doctors across Scotland. Those interested should apply by Friday 30 January.
